Climate change is devastating the world’s wildlife and ecosystems. As it heats the planet, many of our delicate ecosystems and their many creatures are heading toward extinction.
One creature that’s already suffering from the warming climate is the monarch butterfly.
The population of western monarchs has fallen by more than 99 percent due to climate change, loss of habitat and pesticide use. Yet it still doesn’t have endangered species protections at the state or federal levels!
Wildlife in the southern states, the Appalachians and the West Coast are at particularly high risk of extinction due to climate change — simply because many species will have no place to go. And this could have a domino effect on other species. For example, if bumblebee numbers decline, then plants die too.
Pollinators like the monarch butterfly are vital to our planet — not just for our gardens, but for our food supply. A world without them would be unthinkable (and unlivable). So we are not going to allow monarch butterflies or other essential pollinators to be eradicated.
No magic solution will stop climate chaos and biodiversity loss. It’s going to take global-scale change. That’s why Food & Water Action has been fighting for years against the biggest threats to our communities and the planet: climate change, pollution and pesticides.
We are fighting to protect our planet and its ecosystems every day by taking on corporate polluters like the fossil fuel industry.
