Hi John,

Last weekend, in just 72 hours, at least 123 people were shot and killed and 297 more were wounded in 335 shootings across the country. What is even more tragic than that violence itself is the fact that it is not unusual. Since the pandemic began, gun violence has spiked, hitting Black and Brown communities hardest, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

There have been 203 mass shootings in the first 134 days of 2021. We cannot endure more needless bloodshed. We need action NOW. Please, email your Senators and urge them to do whatever it takes to act on gun safety.

The House of Representatives has already passed two bills to close deadly loopholes in the background checks system that allow guns to fall into dangerous hands. These bills are crucial first steps in slowing the gun violence epidemic plaguing our communities. And they enjoy remarkable public support: 97 percent of Americans support expanded background checks.

The problems arise in the Senate, where the gun lobby’s grip is stronger and where 60 votes are required to pass new gun laws. The reality is right now, a few senators, beholden to the gun lobby, are standing in the way of long-overdue gun responsibility laws that would save countless American lives. We cannot accept this status quo.

That is why we joined the #TheTimeIsNow coalition and the growing chorus calling on the Senate to find 60 votes to pass lifesaving gun laws or to put an end to the filibuster. Today, we’re asking you to join the call too: Email your Senators and tell them that #TheTimeIsNow to end gun violence.

Meaningful legislative action to prevent gun violence cannot wait any longer. We need every voice to join us in this fight.

Thank you,
Dylan (he/him)
