Downtown celebration week starts today

*INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 7, 2019) *Today, Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs kicked off the second annual Downtown Development Week.

Our downtowns are the heartbeats of our communities and a large part of our residents quality of life, said Crouch. A thriving downtown corridor is important to a communitys continued development, and we want to celebrate all of the amenities they have to offer.

Launched in 2018, Downtown Development Week is an opportunity for communities across the state to host events and activities within their downtown and commercial districts, spurring economic development and showcasing updates they have made to the downtown spaces. This year, Downtown Development Week runs Monday, October 7 through Saturday, October 12.

"Local economies grow when investments are made. People are drawn to local downtowns and are looking for opportunities to grow the sense of community while also having a little fun, said Jodi Golden, Executive Director of OCRA. Im looking forward to visiting a few communities celebrating this week in unique ways.

More than 30 cities and towns have planned events to celebrate their downtowns through a variety of events and activities. Five of those communities were awarded with up to a $1,000 grant to help fund the planned activities. An online map is available for viewers to discover events happening in downtowns across the state. Follow all the celebrations with #IlovemyINdowntown.
