This year, my husband was in the ICU, on life support, for almost two weeks. I was the only family member allowed to visit due to COVID restrictions. Each day I’d sit with him, hold his hand, and wait for the team of doctors to give updates. It was very scary, and honestly, kind of mind-numbing.

I tried working; I thought it would be a good distraction. My coworkers were all very supportive. But then, someone emailed asking me to do an easy thing, and I snapped. That’s when I knew I needed time away.

Then I realized: I have Paid Family Medical Leave through my job. I told my boss that I wanted to use it.

Without access to paid leave, I would not have been able to make it through that month. It was crucial that I had time to go to the hospital each day and then come home to call each of our family members with updates. It was crucial to have time to just be, as I dealt with fear, exhaustion, and the logistics of a 2-week hospital stay and weeks of recovery.

I was fortunate that I didn’t have to choose between a paycheck and caring for myself and my husband. But too many Minnesotans are forced to face that choice.
