On Mother’s Day in 2000, I stood with 750,000 thousand people on the National Mall in Washington, DC – the Million Mom March was one of the largest protests to happen in its history. Hundreds of thousands gathered together on that day, on the Mall and across the country, to demand an end to our nation’s deadly epidemic of gun violence, a fight that I continue to this day.

But now, 21 years later our gun laws have failed to change and over 100 people are dying every day because of it. It is far past time to expand and enhance our background check system and we need your help to do it: Will you urge your Senator to strengthen and expand the Brady Background Check System NOW? Then, my daughter, Avani, was just over one year old and I spoke out for her safety and to save the twelve kids that we lost every day to gun violence. (Today, we still lose 8 children to gun violence per day. Progress, but we must continue the fight to save lives.)

Then, an assault weapons ban was in place and the Brady Bill had created a life-saving background check system.

A year after our historic action, Million Mom March joined with Brady and we have been advocating for children’s safety from gun violence, and the safety of all Americans, ever since. For decades, we have fought tooth and nail against the gun lobby’s deadly influence to create the landscape necessary to pass landmark change again:

Now, my daughter is 22 and she witnessed a fierce gun violence prevention champion, who shares Avani’s Black and Indian culture, become Vice President of the United States.

Now, we have gun violence prevention champions in the House, Senate, and White House.

And right now, life-saving legislation to expand and enhance the Brady Background Check system is waiting for a Senate vote.

John, we cannot wait another 21 years – if we wait even one year, thousands of Americans will lose their lives to senseless gun violence.
