[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Friends —

Yesterday, news broke that Heritage Action, the political arm of the Heritage Foundation and one of the top Republican dark money groups, has been pushing voter suppression bills in state legislatures across the country.

In front of a room full of their donors, they claimed credit for writing model voter suppression legislation, pressuring Republicans to act quickly, and faking grassroots support, and it’s just the start. They said they’re willing to spend $24 million to pass these bills in eight battleground states.

Republicans are trying, with all the tools in their belt, to stop citizens from voting so that billionaires and corporations can safely run the country, free from interference from regular people.

The threat is existential to our nation, and the For The People Act is the answer.

Will you add your name to my petition to demand the Senate call a vote and pass the For the People Act now? It’s urgent that my colleagues feel pressure from you, the people we serve, to protect our democracy and ensure free and fair elections:

There is no single solution to fixing all that is corrupt within our politics, but the For the People Act comes about as close as we can to a panacea.

This bill, which you’ll also hear called H.R.1 or S.1 expands voting rights — requiring states to have early voting periods and allow same-day registration. The bill also creates a public financing system for campaigns and requires greater transparency on who is funding super PACs. It outlaws partisan gerrymandering by mandating independent commissions — not politicians — in each state to draw congressional districts.

It’s a downpayment on better government.

Right now, Republicans want it both ways. They want to tell their base via a right-wing media echo chamber that the election was rigged and should’ve been overturned, while they try to tell journalists that no one is questioning the legitimacy of the election.

No seriously. Yesterday, Republican Congressional leaders tried to claim that nobody was questioning the legitimacy of the election right outside the White House mere hours after House Republicans ousted one of their own leaders for trying to tell the truth.

They learned from how the media covered Trump. The lies are so big and so frequent that they largely get a pass. It’s mind-boggling and infuriating.

But the truth is the majority of Republicans have given up on democracy, and it is a direct consequence of their party’s leaders’ behavior.

But we cannot accept this. If we do, American democracy will die. We need a plan to turn this around. Passing the For the People Act is step one.

Add your name: Tell my Senate colleagues to pass the For the People Act. We cannot take our democracy for granted.

Republicans’ attacks on voting rights and democracy have happened in plain sight. The question that every Senator must be forced to answer now is what they will do to preserve them. A vote to pass this bill would be a good start.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
