Timing here is critical, Friend? ? ? ? ? Friend ? we reached out earlier this week with the news that the Senate successfully voted to overturn a Trump order that had effectively freed oil and gas companies from being required to detect and repair methane leaks.

This is big. Methane is an incredibly potent greenhouse gas ? many times more damaging than carbon dioxide. Official reports show 2020 saw the highest annual increase in methane levels on record.

We need to push forward on the House vote quickly, before more damage is done. Every indication is that it's going to be close. At current count, a few votes could decide if this passes.

Timing here is critical, friend. The Senate vote relied on an obscure law called the Congressional Review Act ? allowing Congress to reverse changes in regulations enacted in the final days of a Presidential administration, without being subject to the 60 vote threshold in the Senate.

The issue is that the House is closely divided ? there's still a chance we could lose this one if the gas industry's pressure campaigns work.

We can't let that happen ? methane is responsible for 25 percent of the climate change we are experiencing today. The Senate vote paves the way for the EPA to move forward with widely supported, sensible safeguards for methane and other air pollution from oil and gas production that would go a long way towards dismantling environmental racism and improving public health, in addition to fighting climate change.
