Sometimes, a helping hand is all someone needs

During the summer of 2019, Vanessa said her life was, “spiraling out of control.”

 

Determined to start her life anew, Vanessa packed up everything she had into her car and moved from Kansas City to Columbia. Upon her arrival, she began working to find resources to help her rebuild her life.

 

At first, finding help seemed difficult and at times she felt hopeless…but then she met Mia, a Central Missouri Community Action (CMCA) Family Success Coach who assured Vanessa that we could help. Working with Mia in our Skill Up Program, Vanessa earned her Substitute Teaching Certificate, a goal she had been working toward but never achieved. Today, she has a position as a teaching assistant at a local school.

 

“Without CMCA, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” says Vanessa. “I am so thankful and grateful! My future is looking brighter now!”

 

It is obstacles like these that can make or break a person’s ability to move from poverty into self-sufficiency. And, it is obstacles like these that we can alleviate with your help.

Here’s what you can expect as a Community Promise Team member…
A place in history
There are only a few times in each of our lives that we get to witness a truly historic accomplishment: Ending smallpox, tearing down the Berlin Wall, the establishment of Community Action! In 1965 President Lydon B. Johnson envisioned The Great Society, a plan to improve the lives of all Americans, regardless of their circumstances. In August of that same year, the Economic Opportunity Act was signed into law by President Johnson creating the nationwide Community Action Network.

At CMCA we live the Promise of Community Action, and believe that lifting people out of poverty in mid-Missouri communities – one individual – one family – at a time is possible. Our goal is to move families living in poverty into financial stability and self-sufficiency. When we achieve this goal, you will celebrate with us as a member of our Community Promise team!

The world we live in right now can be hard. And scary. And overwhelming. Despite homelessness, unemployment, hunger, and other inequities there is something we can do. Our contribution to supporting individuals and families with low-income to move them toward financial stability and self-sustainability is vital to ensuring a healthy, vibrant community. How Will Your Monthly Gift Help? Over the course of one-year:

• Your monthly gift of just$10 will provide funding to pay a utility bill.
• Your monthly gift of just$25 will provide funding to feed a class of children in Head Start for a year.
• Your monthly gift of $50will provide funding for a month’s rent for a family.
• Your monthly gift of $100will provide funding to support crisis intervention for families in need.
