Dear John,

The Amazon rainforest -- the lungs of our earth -- is burning. We’re losing
thousands of square miles of precious rainforest largely due to Brazilian
President Bolsnaro’s explicit calls for clear-cutting and deforestation.

Now, Trump is following his lead here in the U.S. He wants to open 10 million
acres of Tongass National Forest for mining and logging. This would be a huge
blow to biodiversity -- many consider the Tongass one of the last truly wild
places in the country.

At Friends of the Earth, we’re not going to let Trump destroy the Tongass on our
watch. We’re mobilizing to push the USDA to reject Trump’s plan -- but we need
your help. If 75% of the people reading this donate before midnight, we’ll meet
our fundraising goal.

Tongass National Forest is a 500-mile archipelago in Alaska. It’s the world's
largest temperate rainforest.

These lands are home to Pacific salmon, iconic bald eagles, Southern Resident
Orcas, and even a 1000-year-old tree! They also contain the traditional
homelands of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Peoples.

Beyond its natural beauty and cultural importance, Tongass Forest is one of the
world’s best climate defenses. The old trees store nearly 10-12 percent of all
carbon consumed by America’s national forests -- and it’s Alaska’s first line of
defense against the worsening climate crisis.

But Trump doesn’t care about our wild places, iconic species, or combating
climate change. He only cares about corporate profits. He wants to let the
timber industry clear-cut vast portions of this forest -- which will devastate
local economies like tourism and fishing. It will decimate the sacred lands of
local Indigenous communities. And it would crush the habitats of wildlife that
calls the Tongass home. We can’t let that happen.

Don’t let Trump destroy an iconic national forest: Donate $10 or more before
midnight tonight!

We’re going up against huge corporations and their powerful cronies in the Trump
administration and Congress -- a daunting task. But with Friends of the Earth
Members like you at our side, I know we can win this fight and protect our
climate and wild places.

We have a comprehensive plan to stop Trump from destroying our wild places,
prevent climate chaos, and support communities on the front lines of this fight:

* We’re sending thousands of comments to the USDA demanding that it protect the
Tongass from mining and logging. This is the same strategy that stopped Trump
from destroying several of our national monuments when he first took office.
* The Tongass is just one example of Trump trying to hand over our most iconic
landscapes to the fossil fuel industry. Last month, Friends of the Earth
members like you took a strong stand against Big Oil during the Climate
Strike by participating in and organizing actions in more than 15 states.
* We’re pushing Members of Congress across the political spectrum to support a
strong Green New Deal that ends our dependence on fossil fuels and addresses
the role of agriculture in the climate crisis. Our organizers have gotten
Representatives on the record taking strong stances against fossil fuel
projects. Now, we’re building support for a broader approach to phasing out
fossil fuels and reining in Big Ag once and for all.

You know that when we work together, we can move mountains. You and I have
already made huge strides in taking on the fossil fuel industry by forcing their
cronies like Ryan Zinke and Scott Pruitt out of the Trump administration.

But we’re running out of time to prevent the worst impacts of climate chaos. And
Trump is continuing to threaten places like Tongass National Forest on a daily
basis. We’ve got to act fast, before our most iconic wild places and the
biodiversity they support disappear forever -- and communities around the world
are left with poisoned air, polluted water, and an unlivable planet.

Make a generous contribution to Friends of the Earth and help protect our
forests, climate and communities from Big Ag and Big Oil.
