If we're ever going to live up to the ideal that all people are created equal, we need to talk about one of the biggest impediments to progress in America today. We need to talk about the filibuster.
The filibuster is the GOP's favorite Jim Crow-era tool for obstructing progress in Washington. Since its inception, it's been used by notoriously racist senators like Strom Thurmond and now Mitch McConnell to prevent people of color from gaining protections, rights, and equity in America.
Analysis shows that from 1917 (the birth of the modern filibuster) to 1994, roughly HALF of all bills stopped by a filibuster were civil rights bills.
If we want to address today's most critical priorities -- from gun safety to climate change to equal voting rights -- then we can no longer allow the filibuster to block our nation's progress.
The filibuster is a tool of obstruction and gridlock wielded all too often against people of color. It's time to abolish it. We need to convince senators on the fence about the filibuster by sending them a message that if they have the courage to do the right thing for our country, we will be there for them.
