We're 100 days into the new administration. What has changed in refugee resettlement? 

Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area, together with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service and the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area will hold a virtual Refugee Town Hall on Thursday, May 20, 2021 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. This forum will feature speakers discussing current issues in the refugee and immigration debate, including Biden Administration actions affecting refugees and asylum seekers and their impact on national and local resettlement. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) will be honored for his leadership in Congress on refugee issues and will give the congressional perspective on these issues.

Meet The Speakers

Representative Jamie Raskin

The Honorable Jamie Raskin (D-MD 8th), member of the House Committee on the Judiciary Committee, will serve as the keynote speaker of the town hall.

Anne E. Derse

Former Ambassador to Azerbaijan and Lithuania Anne E. Derse is a Deacon and Community Life Coordinator at St. John’s Episcopal Church Norwood Parish. 

 

Krish O'Mara Vignarajah

Krish O'Mara Vignarajah is the President & CEO of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS). She was nine months old when her family escaped civil war in Sri Lanka and built a life in Maryland. 

Kristyn Peck

Kristyn Peck is the CEO of Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA). Peck holds over 17 years of legislative and administraticve advocacy in areas such as child protection, migration, refugee resettlement, and human trafficking. 

Dr. Mamadou Sy

Dr. Mamadou Sy is the Vice President of Operations at Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA). Since joining LSSNCA in 2004, Dr. Sy has helped resettle over 5,000 refugees in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. 

Mary Burce-Warlick

Mary Burce-Warlick is the former Ambassador to Serbia, former U.S. Consul General in Melbourne, Australia, and former Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Energy Resources at the Department of State

Paula Boland, Esq.

Paula Boland, Esq. is the President and CEO of United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA). Boland is a dynamic leader who holds extensive experience in the fields of environmental law, international affairs, and nonprofit management.
