House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy went on Fox News Sunday to convince millions of Americans that Trump took immediate steps to quell the January 6 insurrection. McCarthy claims he was the first person to call Trump and tell him about the insurrection. He said that Trump ended the call by saying “he'll put something out to make sure to stop this.”
Here's what actually happened according to testimony from other Republicans: Trump heard his supporters were storming the Capitol and replied, “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.” McCarthy and Trump then had a screaming match while McCarthy begged Trump to call his seditionist supporters off.
Then Trump put out a video telling a mob of white supremacists they're “very special.”
We're not going to let the GOP rewrite history on this attack. The Justice Department has already charged nearly 400 insurrectionists and arrested 57 members of extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers for breaching the Capitol. New evidence suggests that these groups had a strategic plan to overthrow the election results by seizing the Capitol.
This wasn't “a rally that got out of hand.” This was planned, and national security experts have warned that without a proper investigation, the violence we saw on January 6 will repeat itself.
Speaker Pelosi has reintroduced her proposal to establish a bipartisan January 6 commission to investigate the insurrection. We want to make it clear to Congress that the American people want accountability -- that's why we're coming to our most engaged supporters.
