Friend, Next week is Michael Brown’s birthday. He would have been 25 years old this year. Seven years ago, a police officer shot and killed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Afterwards, his body was left in the street for four hours. Michael’s community, already burdened with unjust over-policing, responded to his violent death and the disrespectful treatment of his body with protective love. The community rose against the injustice of Michael Brown’s death and, even when met with violent responses from a militarized police force, continued to protest for change. Love is the untold story of the Ferguson protests. People were in the streets because of their love of community and love of one another. People marched and chanted because of their love of the ideals of justice and fairness. Love inspired people to demand more for their communities. Join me on May 20th, the anniversary of Michael Brown’s birthday, as I talk with Rika Tyler, an organizer forged in the protests of Ferguson, who will discuss her work during that time and how she saw love at work in the midst of the uprising. |
