The Migration Policy Institute

May 13, 2021

Dear John,

Issues around U.S. refugee resettlement and the asylum process have been much in the news, amid significant policy developments and rising arrivals of asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border.

A new article in the Migration Policy Institute’s online magazine, the Migration Information Source, offers a useful snapshot of recent asylum grants as well as current and historical refugee resettlement, drawing upon several government datasets to sketch changing trends.

It also details characteristics of the U.S. refugee and asylee populations, including top countries of origin. And for resettled refugees, it provides the most recent data on top destinations in the United States, religious affiliation, age, gender, and more.

You can read the article, which includes useful charts and tables, here: www.migrationpolicy.org/article/refugees-and-asylees-united-states-2021.

The article is part of a once-a-month series in which the Migration Information Source spotlights a particular immigrant population. For the full archive of data-rich Spotlights, covering everything from international students to immigrants from Mexico, India, sub-Saharan Africa, Cuba, and more, click here.

And I invite you to sign up for the twice-monthly Source newsletter to keep up with future Spotlights, the monthly U.S. Policy Beat, and a rich array of country profiles and feature articles on migration-related developments around the globe.

Thank you for your interest in our work,
