During Mother’s Day weekend, there were nine mass shootings across seven states. 16 people died, and 41 were wounded.

For many Americans, this was the first holiday their families could gather together as we emerge from the pandemic. What they thought would be safe celebrations with loved ones instead turned violent.

More cities are beginning to allow gatherings of larger numbers. Families and friends are reconnecting, offices are reopening—and this is why now, more than ever—we need to pass universal background checks to ensure guns don’t fall into the wrong hands.

We’re gathering in groups again. Memorial Day, Father’s Day, and more celebrations are right around the corner.

But that should not mean more shootings. Gun sales are hitting record highs and we need to make sure these purchases are made legally, responsibly, and safely.
