States United to Prevent Gun Violence

Dear John,

Sick. Nearly every day now, I feel sick. Sick at heart.

Guns used to kill and maim people, day in and day out.

Yesterday, in the wee hours of the morning, 4 people were shot and killed and 5 were wounded, in a small neighborhood bar in Kansas City, KS.

It’s a little bar where neighbors go to hang out with friends – they even have to show a membership card to get in because the club is privately owned. It’s where folks go to watch TV together, have a drink, relax and have some fun.

Instead, they went to be shot at, to be traumatized, and some to die.

I am sick at heart.

This mass shooting tops off nine months in which we have already seen nearly 30,000 violent deaths by gun across the nation, some 170 of those in the Kansas City metro area.

Judy Sherry, president of Grandparents Against Gun Violence, our affiliate state-based organization in both Kansas and Missouri, says, "Little has been done to address gun violence in Kansas, with local legislators loosening gun regulations rather than enacting laws."

Our grassroots state leaders know this equation by heart:

Easy access to guns = more death by guns.

Lawmakers, now it’s time for you to do the math.
