Since Donald Trump lost the presidency, there has been constant speculation about the future of the Republican Party. If you listen to the most powerful Republicans in D.C., there is only one viable path forward -- and it runs through Trump.
Sen. Lindsey Graham is the latest to clarify this thinking. Last week, Graham was asked on Sean Hannity's Fox News show about the growing Republican animosity towards outspoken conservative Trump critic Liz Cheney. Here's what Graham had to say:
“I would just say to my Republican colleagues: 'Can we move forward without President Trump?' The answer is no. … I've determined we can't grow without him.”
Now, let's be clear about what this means. Graham and the Republican Party see the racism and xenophobia that Trump embodies as essential to their success. They embrace his disdain for the rule of law that led to the insurrection at the US Capitol. They believe in the cruelty that Trump aimed at everyone from immigrant children to people with disabilities to Gold Star military families.
The America we want to live in is one where progress and decency are valued, and the honest truth is that as long as the Republican Party is in league with Trump, they cannot be trusted to act in the best interests of almost all Americans.
The only path forward for our country is to ensure progressive Democrats win their elections.
