Dear Friend, America is facing some incredible challenges. 32 million people have been infected with the coronavirus.1 Nearly 10 million people are out of work.2 And 13 million children live in food insecure homes.3 But what is Mitch McConnell’s priority? He just said he's “100% focused on stopping” the Biden administration.4 McConnell can’t be more clear—Republicans will not work with Democrats in the best interests of the people. And yet Senate Democrats like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema still refuse to end the filibuster because of some pipe dream that Republicans will cooperate. Now critical legislation like voting rights bills, the American Families Plan, and the American Jobs Plan are all at a standstill. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: It’s hard to understate how critical ending the filibuster is at this moment. Since 2010, when Mitch McConnell and then Speaker of the House John Boehner vowed to make Barack Obama a one-term president by blocking all of his initiatives, the Republican use of the filibuster has tripled.5,6 Because of the near certainty of a Republican filibuster, bills addressing climate change, a public option for health care, and gun violence prevention, among hundreds of others, have failed to come to a vote for more than a decade.7 The White House has been cleared of Donald Trump, and Democrats have a congressional majority, but the Democrats’ refusal to kill the filibuster will likely mean two years of inaction—and potentially a Republican return to power. In the meantime, the country is facing dire issues that cannot be addressed without passing a bold, progressive agenda. We can’t wait any longer. We need serious policy changes NOW to address the crises our country is facing. Demand Progress is planning a public campaign to call out both McConnell’s willingness to sell out the country for power and Senate Democrats' failure to do anything about it. Will you donate to help end the filibuster? Thanks for standing with us. Robert Cruickshank, Sources: 1.
