John — Over the course of this year, we’ve highlighted a number of key legislative successes and progressive bills that Barbara helped pass through the House.

But what happened to all of those bills? Because of the filibuster, a Jim Crow-era procedural rule in the Senate, they are still sitting in Mitch McConnell’s legislative graveyard.

Democrats have 51 votes in the Senate. That majority should be enough to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, a $15 minimum wage, and so much more. Bills that will help secure our democracy and give working families a fair shot.

The filibuster is a Jim Crow-era rule in the Senate giving outsized power to the minority party and requiring 60 votes to pass any legislation.

There’s nothing sacred about the filibuster. It’s an antiquated rule that has been used throughout history to block progressive bills and undermine the will of the voters.

And sure enough, Mitch McConnell is leveraging it as a procedural roadblock to make sure Democrats can’t act on gun safety, the climate crisis, police reform, health care, and so much more — even though we control both chambers of Congress and the White House!
