I was excited to finally get out of the house this past weekend, feeling safe enough to campaign in person for the first time. I went to an SEIU rally to support our brave nurses in Madison and then participated in other events in Milwaukee to fight for a morally just state legislative budget and to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. But one encounter on the campaign trail stayed with me that I want to share. You may have heard this already, but I want to make sure all of my supporters know why I’m so invested in this race.

While I was campaigning in Milwaukee, I met Tim (I won't use his real name here). Tim was the product of our sub-par health insurance system. According to Tim, his employers rarely covered all of his mental health medicines. Consequently, it was hard for him to get along with co-workers and bosses and never lasted long at any one job. Different employers meant different prescription drug plans. Some plans covered his medicines, some did not. He went without one drug for seven years. He was visibly nervous and shy, and reluctant to contribute to conversations.

Afterward, he grabbed me like a messenger out of breath and shared his story. His story was compelling and made you ask the question: how could this happen in the world's richest country?

Tim took part of his Saturday afternoon off and was away from family just so he could meet with me to talk about Medicare for All. He was exhausted from being turned away or treated dismissively by other politicians. A meeting with an under-dog US Senate candidate seemed his only option.

After our meeting, I told my staffer, Tim was one more reason that I would fight until the last dog died to get elected to the U.S. Senate and make Medicare for All the law of the land.

Ensuring everyone has healthcare is a personal issue for me. If you feel the same way that Medicare for All should be the law of the land, can you support our campaign to unseat Ron Johnson? Any amount would be greatly appreciated. [[link removed]]CHIP IN NOW [[link removed]]

I don’t have millions of dollars to my name, and I don’t have family money to pour into this campaign. I prefer it that way because I can fully empathize with folks like Tim and their day-to-day struggles.

I look forward to continuing to run a race where we fight for all the Tims out there.

Thank you for your continued support,

Tom Nelson

Tom Nelson serves as County Executive for Outagamie, one of the worst-hit COVID areas in the nation. Local officials have been leading our country through the pandemic because Donald Trump and Ron Johnson have failed. Tom is running for U.S. Senate because we need real leaders in Washington who will take COVID seriously. And if we can take on a pandemic, we can take on anything. And if you can win in a red county six times, you can win anywhere. If you’d like to unsubscribe, click here. [[link removed]]
