The Canadian Government Has Issued a Permit Allowing Marineland Canada to Export 5 Beluga Whales to Mystic Aquarium in the U.S.
Take Action: Email the Hon. Bernadette Jordan to Revoke the Export Permit
Dear John,
LCA has learned the Hon. Bernadette Jordan, Canada's Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, has approved a permit requested by Marineland Canada to export 5 Beluga whales to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. A team from Mystic Aquarium is currently onsite and preparing the whales to be exported.
Both Minister Jordan and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans did not publicly issue a statement announcing the export permit had been granted. Despite attempts to discuss the matter with Minister Jordan, LCA did not get a response and has learned the export does not prohibit captive breeding or using the Beluga whales for entertainment performances.
Canada passed the historic Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act (formerly Bill S203), in 2019. The Act prohibits breeding cetaceans or using them in entertainment performances. Exporting the Beluga whales outside of Canada to countries with weaker protection laws goes against the intentions of the Act. To learn more click here.
LCA is urging supporters to email the Hon. Bernadette Jordan to revoke the export permit. Click here to take action!
