John,

We teach our kids that the capital of our country is Washington, D.C.

We also teach them that we have certain responsibilities — like paying taxes. In return, we get representation in Congress and the benefits of living in these United States. Remember the phrase “No taxation without representation” in your history books?

Being able to elect voting members of Congress is true for almost all of us. In fact, here in Oregon, we’re about to get another seat in Congress soon, due to population growth since 2010.

But these rights are denied to the 700,000 residents of the District of Columbia who, among other things, pay more taxes per capita to the federal government than the residents of any state. 47% of the District’s population is Black; 11% is Latinx. And its population is greater than that of Wyoming or Vermont. Yet, currently, the District has a single, non-voting representative in Congress.

This is inherently wrong — and another vestige of racial injustice in our country. That’s why last month, I joined 20 of my Attorney General colleagues from around the country, including D.C. AG Karl Racine, in supporting statehood for the District of Columbia. We must right this historic wrong and grant residents of our Nation’s Capital the representation they deserve.

We need 3,000 more signatures by the end of the week to show massive public support for D.C. statehood. Will you SIGN THIS PETITION NOW to tell Republican Senators we will not be silent on this topic?

Thank you for taking action,
Ellen
