Florida governor Ron DeSantis just signed a sweeping voter restriction bill that would make Donald Trump and Brian Kemp proud.
The Washington Post reports the new bill “adds hurdles to voting by mail, restricts the use of drop boxes and prohibits any actions that could influence those standing in line to vote,” which will likely “discourage nonpartisan groups from offering food or water to voters as they wait in the hot Florida sun.”
We're not surprised DeSantis is following Georgia's playbook, team. He became the loudest supporter of Trump's war on mail-in-voting in 2020, and earlier this year, Trump called this wannabe dictator “the future” of the GOP. Now DeSantis is waging a war against mail-in-voting in a battleground state where more than 40% of the electorate cast mail-in ballots in 2020.
DeSantis is selling out the American people to protect his own political prospects -- he doesn't deserve to keep his seat. We want to flip this seat next year and replace DeSantis with a progressive who cares about making sure every American's voice is heard.
We know we can defeat DeSantis in 2022, despite the GOP's best efforts to suppress the vote. In 2018, a progressive came within 0.4% of defeating DeSantis -- less than 33,000 votes. We can finish the job next year, and DNC Chair Jamie Harrison made it clear Democrats “are going to be doing everything we can” to defeat Trump's favorite governor.
The only problem is that we need a grassroots push to defeat Trump-backed incumbents like DeSantis -- and right now, we're falling over $1,042 short of our daily goal because not nearly enough Democrats have him on their radar.
