Centre for Mental Health news

May 2021

Hello from Sarah!

Dear friends,

Today we published
our latest forecast of Covid-19’s impact on the nation’s mental health. It’s a deeply concerning picture, which confirms our prediction that some 10 million people in England will need mental health support as a direct result of the pandemic. It also sheds more light on the groups who are most likely to need support, including carers and people who have been hospitalised or bereaved as a result of Covid-19.

Our analysis shows that the number of people who will need mental health support is three times higher than the current capacity of mental health services in England. So it is absolutely paramount that the Government and NHS take urgent action now to meet the very steep increase in demand for mental health support. Please join us in this call by
sharing our work across your own networks!

As restrictions continue to ease, we hope you are keeping well and enjoying some glimpses of normality.

Take care,

Sarah

Covid-19 and the nation's mental health
Our new model confirms our forecast that some ten million people in England will need mental health support as a result of the pandemic, and identifies the key groups of people most at risk of having a mental health difficulty.

The predicted levels of demand are two to three times that of current NHS mental health capacity. The Government and the NHS must take action now to meet this steep increase in demand and develop services to meet the specific needs arising from the pandemic.

Borderline Personality Disorder Awareness Month
The term borderline personality disorder is not one that we like or choose, but it is one that is recognised clinically. The stigma that exists around this diagnosis means that too many people don’t get the support they need. We’ve brought together a range of information and resources to raise awareness and call for better understanding and support.
