Cheney’s colleagues made her pay the price for refusing to go along with former President Donald Trump’s countless lies and debunked conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.

She told the truth about Trump’s incitement of the insurrection at the Capitol long after her Republican colleagues had faltered and fallen in line with Trump — who vilified her as one of just a few Republicans who voted for his second impeachment.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy argued in an open letter to his colleagues that despite this purge of anti-Trump voices, the GOP remains a “big tent party” that embraces “free thought and debate” — but the truth is clear:

The GOP is continuing to accelerate into an authoritarian, anti-democratic political party that will not and cannot moderate itself.

But here’s the thing, friend: We can’t defeat hate with spite. We can’t defeat dishonesty with more lies. We can’t defeat cruelty with more malevolence.

We need love. We need truth. We need decency. And in order to keep these values on the agenda, we can’t afford to lose our Democratic majorities to Kevin McCarthy or Mitch McConnell.
