MetroAccess OCC workers OK strike if necessary Fed up with unfair labor practices and poor treatment by their employer, MV Transportation, ATU Local 689 members working at the MetroAccess Operations Control Center (OCC) Call Center in Hyattsville have voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike if necessary. WMATA contracts with private contractor MV Transportation to provide dispatch, reservation, and scheduling of all MetroAccess paratransit services. Despite working through the pandemic for more than a year on an expired contract, MetroAccess Call Center workers were offered a meager 1% wage increase and the union reports that morale is plummeting, with turnover at near 100%. The union has also filed multiple charges of unfair labor practice violations against MV Transportation. Negotiations resumed Tuesday. Transit workers in the region have been forced to strike multiple times since 2019, including the Fairfax Connector, Omniride, and the 85-day long WMATA Cinder Bed Bus Garage strike that ended with WMATA agreeing to end privatization in the Metrobus and Metrorail systems.
ACLU staff union wins voluntary recognition ACLU Staff United, the union of ACLU national workers, was voluntarily recognized on Tuesday by ACLU management. ACLU Staff United is organized with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU), IFPTE Local 70. “We appreciate that we can now get to the bargaining table to create a better, stronger ACLU for the members of our bargaining unit,” the union said in a statement. “Congratulations to ACLU Staff United. Through strong organizing, they won their union,” said NPEU Interim President Katie Barrows. “We are glad ACLU Staff United was able to collaborate with management on a voluntary recognition agreement, and we stand ready to support them as they negotiate their first union contract.” ACLU Staff United is made up of national American Civil Liberties Union workers from the national headquarters in New York and offices in D.C., San Francisco, and Raleigh, national chapter workers in the Dakotas and Puerto Rico, and remote workers across the U.S.
