London elections round-up

Mayoral election: Sadiq Khan (Lab) was re-elected as Mayor of London on Thursday 6 May after securing 55.2 per cent of votes in a second round run off with Conservative Shaun Bailey (44.8 per cent).


London Assembly Elections: In the poll for the 25 London Assembly members (14 constituency seats and 11 London-wide), Labour secured 11 seats (-1); Conservatives 9 (+1); the Green Party 3 (+1) and the Liberal Democrats 2 (+1).

Council by-elections: A total of 46 council ward by elections held over from lockdown were also contested on 6 May - see full list below (click on ward for results):

Governance referendums: Two governance referendums were held in Newham and Tower Hamlets, where voters were given the choice of retaining their current system of directly elected mayors, or reverting to a conventional council leader and cabinet model. Both boroughs voted to keep their Mayoral system (in Newham by 56 per cent to 44 per cent and in Tower Hamlets by 78 per cent to 22 per cent).

New chief executive

Alison Griffin has been appointed as Chief Executive of London Councils, following the departure of previous chief executive John O'Brien, who announced in September 2020 that he would be leaving the organisation after 14 years at the helm.


The appointment was made by a panel comprised of the Leaders of the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat Groups on London Councils with the Chair of the Policy and Resources Committee at the City of London Corporation.


Chair of London Councils Cllr Georgia Gould said: "Alison brings with her a passion for community engagement, a deep understanding of local government finance and experience of collaboration that will enable London Councils to build on what has been learned over the past year and provide even stronger support to the boroughs in the years to come. I am very excited that Alison will be leading London Councils into the future and help us deliver for our great, diverse city.'


Alison Griffin, said: ‘I’m very excited to be joining London Councils. I am looking forward to working with the boroughs and partners in central government, the GLA and all London’s public services as well as the business and voluntary sectors to ensure that London and Londoners are able to recover from the pandemic, tackle the big issues such as climate change and seize the opportunities of the future."


Alison will take up her role at London Councils in July 2021. Deputy Chief Executive Dick Sorabji will be acting Chief Executive of London Councils in the interim.

Lambeth Leader to stand down

On Monday (10 May) Lambeth Leader Cllr Jack Hopkins, announced that he had decided to stand down from the post.


Cllr Hopkins was first elected as a councillor in Oval Ward in 2010 and has served in the Cabinet since 2012 and as Leader of the Council for two years.

A new Leader will be elected at a future meeting of Lambeth council (date to be confirmed).
