Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced a new proposal to establish a bipartisan January 6 commission to investigate the Capitol riot after Republicans blocked her first efforts.
Now Mitch McConnnell has another demand to start the process: “The scope of [the commission] needs to deal with a little bit broader than just January the 6th. We've also had a number of violent disturbances around the country last year...”
That's right. McConnell wants the January 6 commission to investigate Black Lives Matter protests too, distracting from the attempted coup that endangered hundreds of his fellow lawmakers.
We're not going to let the GOP rewrite history on this attack. The Justice Department has already charged nearly 400 insurrectionists and arrested 57 members of extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers for breaching the Capitol. New evidence suggests that these groups had a strategic plan to overthrow the election results by seizing the Capitol.
This wasn't “a rally that got out of hand.” This was planned, and national security experts have warned that without a proper investigation, the violence we saw on January 6 will repeat itself.
Now that Speaker Pelosi has reintroduced her proposal, we want to make it clear to Congress that the American people want accountability -- that's why we're coming to our most engaged supporters.
