Meet the pro-Trump extremist that’s trying to unseat AG Herring.
Friend, there’s only one statewide race for Attorney General this year – in Virginia – and we officially have a Republican opponent locked in.
Meet Jason Miyares, a right-wing extremist in the Virginia House of Delegates with an ominous track record on everything from health care to gun safety to justice reforms.
Miyares has repeatedly shown that he’ll sacrifice the wellbeing of Virginians for his own benefit – like when he opposed Medicaid expansion and put the health care of 500,000 residents at risk. Or when he voted against universal background checks and red flag laws, in a state that has experienced more than its share of mass shootings and gun violence tragedy. Or when he voted against banning “no knock" warrants, the police tactic that contributed to the murder of Breonna Taylor.
Dem AG Mark Herring’s background couldn’t be more different.
AG Herring is a giant in progressive politics and has become a national leader on the issues that matter to Virginians. That’s why the GOP spent more than $7,000,000 to try to beat him in 2017.
If you need a refresher on AG Herring’s track record, here’s how he’s championed Virginians:
Created the Office of Civil Rights to protect Virginians from discrimination.
Fought to protect the Affordable Care Act (ACA) beside fellow Dem AGs who argued in front of the Supreme Court
Defended Virginia’s gun safety measures from the NRA’s legal challenges.
Helped the state legislature ban chokeholds, ban “no knock” warrants, get unfit officers off the streets, and pass other essential reforms to the justice system
Eliminated Virginia’s backlog of untested sexual assault kits
Worked with VA lawmakers to start decriminalizing marijuana – and forge a path toward legalization and regulation
Updated Virginia’s definition of a hate crime – and empowered his office to prosecute them through grand jury trials
Filed a lawsuit to ensure that Virginia’s ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment is recognized, and that the ERA is added to the U.S. Constitution
The difference between AG Herring and his GOP opponent, Jason Miyares, couldn’t be more clear: AG Herring has a long background in helping Virginians thrive, while Jason Miyares is a threat to the safety and prosperity of Virginia and our nation.
