John,
The Senate is expected to take a vote on statehood for Washington, D.C., and we're as close as we've ever been to seeing a star added to our flag.
Mitch McConnell and his Republican senators have blocked statehood efforts for years, claiming it would “help the Democrats win elections in perpetuity” and secure two Democratic Senate seats.
Now, we have the Senate majority. We can pass this bill. But Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin says he won't back statehood for D.C.
More than 700,000 Americans, almost half of whom are Black, live in our nation's capital. They pay more in taxes than residents of 22 other states -- but they have no representation in Congress.
The GOP is used to disenfranchising voters of color to stay in power, and they'll do anything they can to block D.C. statehood in the Senate. Every American deserves to have their voice heard in Congress, John. As we prepare to keep this momentum for statehood going, we need your help to show Sen. Manchin that this is what the American people want.
Please, let us know where you stand and help us send a message to Washington:
Do you think D.C. residents should be equally represented in Congress?
