The Seattle Times:
"How to help employers and those struggling to get into the workforce"

Hello,
Derek knows that long-term unemployment is a challenge that began long before the pandemic, but has gotten much worse. The numbers don't lie: 4.2 million Americans were experiencing long-term unemployment in March of 2021 -- a 3.1 million uptick since February of 2020.
The effects of this long-term unemployment crisis are devastating to families, potential workers, and our communities. Prolonged joblessness can lock workers out of the labor market and lead to lower wages.
Derek knows folks experiencing long-term unemployment aren't lazy. And he knows the misguided approach of opposing unemployment benefits won't solve this long-term unemployment crisis.
Instead, Derek has proposed a new solution: the Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act. You can learn more about this new legislation by reading Derek's recent Seattle Times op-ed.

The Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act would help generate work opportunities and get unemployed Americans back in the workforce. It would target local funding for transportation, child care, job readiness training, substance abuse treatment, and more.
The labor and workforce experts have praised Derek's legislation. Already it's been endorsed by the Service Employees International Union, the National Urban League, the United States Workforce Association, the National Skills Coalition, and a whole host of other organizations.
Derek and labor organizations know that we need the Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act now more than ever. Read more about Derek's legislation, then sign on now as a citizen co-sponsor of the Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act.
