We see the devastation of climate change every day — from extreme weather and melting glaciers to shifting ecological zones. We need to act fast to stave off the worst impacts before we reach the point of no return.

Cities are major contributors to climate change. According to United Nations Habitat, 78 percent of the world's energy is used in cities, and cities produce more than 60 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Yet cities are also vulnerable to the risks of climate change, like flooding from rising sea levels, extreme storms, heatwaves, and water shortages.

That's why Representatives Cori Bush and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the Green New Deal for Cities Act of 2021. This legislation would provide $1 trillion in funding to local, state, tribal and territorial governments to help address the climate crisis and create jobs in the process.

The Green New Deal for Cities Act would:

* Provide funding for climate and environmental justice projects, like: bike lanes, electric vehicle charging stations, clean water infrastructure and wind power; monitoring air quality; testing soil and water for contaminants; and phasing out fossil fuel infrastructure.
* Prioritize community voices over fossil fuel industry interests; no more expanding fossil fuel infrastructure through false climate "solutions" like carbon capture.
* Support housing stability by requiring governments to work with tenant groups to prevent displacement in communities receiving funding.
* Create jobs and prioritize equitable and local hiring conditions, labor agreements and wage requirements.

Food & Water Action and more than 70 grassroots and environmental organizations support this legislation, but we need your help getting legislators on board. Urge your representative to co-sponsor the Green New Deal for Cities Act.

The climate crisis grows more serious each day, and our dependence on fossil fuels continues polluting our water and air, and endangering our health. With enough public pressure, we can convince Congress to keep fossil fuels in the ground and pursue climate policies that will actually address the climate crisis — the Green New Deal for Cities is a good place to start.
