Liz WillenDear Reader,

During this incredibly difficult year for education (and just about everything else) we must find ways to celebrate small victories and big milestones. I hope you will join me in one of them: A big happy birthday wish to our hardworking team at The Hechinger Report. We turned 11 this week – senior citizens in the world of nonprofit journalism – and many of us have been here from the very beginning.

Our mission is more critical than ever, with the pandemic exposing widespread inequality in education from the earliest years.

This week, we bring you fresh insight into new higher education research, as well as columnist Andre Perry’s clear-eyed look at the controversy surrounding the teaching of critical race theory. You’ll find a robust selection of opinion pieces and a close-up look at ways schools are using art to help kids cope with pandemic-related trauma. If you enjoy our newsletter, please ask friends and colleagues to sign up – and, even better, become a member.  As always, we love to hear from you.
