I like to say that we Secretaries of State are in the democracy business. And it’s an important time to be in the democracy business with so many legislatures around the country (and in Minnesota!) passing laws to restrict voting.

That’s why it’s more important than ever that Congress pass the For the People Act. Today's a crucial day for its passage, as the bill faces its latest test in a key Senate Committee chaired by Senator Amy Klobuchar.

This critical piece of legislation has already passed the House and now needs to be passed by the Senate. Last week, I stood with secretaries of state from around the country to urge Congress to act immediately. Will you join me and tell Congress to pass For the People Act right away?

In Minnesota, the For the People Act would further increase access to voting - and prevent our state from enacting voter suppression laws in the future. It would also:

• Provide for secure, accessible drop boxes for absentee ballot return
• Prevent long wait times at the polls - limiting any wait time to no longer than 30 minutes
• Protect and expand voting from home
• Further streamline the voter registration process
• Restore the right to vote to those who have left prison behind 
• End partisan gerrymandering and prison gerrymandering in federal congressional redistricting

In Minnesota we take pride in exercising the right to vote--and with the For The People Act we look forward to the use of new tools that will keep our voter participation and our voter confidence at the highest levels well into the future.
