| Friend, I hope you will register to join us for Advancing Criminal Justice Reform Through a 21st Century Latinx Lens, this Thursday, May 13 and Friday, May 14 from 9:00 am-1:00 pm PST. This virtual convening will focus on the interconnected and diverse experiences of the nation’s Latinx communities, the ways in which Latinos have historically been left out of justice reform, and the opportunity to build political power to advance robust justice transformations for all Americans.  In the U.S., the war on drugs has failed to reduce the harms of drugs – while causing the systematic over-criminalization and mass incarceration of Latinxs. The drug war fuels racial profiling, violence against immigrants, intrusive government surveillance, and militarization of local law enforcement and our international borders. At this event, we will also engage in conversations about the role of harm reduction within the Latinx community, the impact of the overdose crisis on Latinx communities and the role Latinxs and allies can play in the alternatives to incarceration movement across the country. I’m excited to be speaking and participating in critical dialogues along with DPA’s Executive Director Kassandra Frederique and Director of National Affairs Maritza Perez. You’ll hear from a diverse set of multi-generational and cross-sector voices who have a role in improving the lives of Latinx communities from San Diego to New York City by promoting data-backed interventions that improve community resiliency and put all Americans on a path to shared prosperity. The intersecting crises of COVID-19, police brutality, growing economic inequality and systemic racism only reinforce the need for bold new visions around dignity and opportunity for Latinos in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, the calls to stop Asian American hate, and to respect our Native American nations.
