Friend, Last week, Facebook’s self-appointed Oversight Board decided to ban former President Trump from Facebook for his role in inciting the insurrection on January 6th. The Oversight Board is not a court and Mark Zuckerberg - a private company CEO- gets the final say on whether President Trump is permanently banned from Facebook.
Facebook was a key organizing tool for the mob that attacked the Capitol on January 6th. Former President Trump’s lies about the election were amplified and promoted on Facebook. The group organized in plain sight and openly advocated for the violent insurrection. Five people died and hundreds were injured.
Despite the tragic consequences of January 6th, Facebook still refuses to answer its own Oversight Board and explain how its algorithm amplifies false information and aids violent groups in organizing. Enough.
Billionaire tech bosses should not determine our path forward as a democracy.
Corporations and their leaders are expected to make money for their shareholders, not do what’s right for our democracy. That’s why I am advocating in Congress for the creation of a dedicated agency for social media oversight.
These companies repeatedly demonstrate that the federal government needs to set the rules of the road - on privacy, data security, and competition- to protect the 3 billion monthly users on social media platforms. Left unchecked, Facebook and other tech companies will continue to pad their profits at the expense of our democracy and our communities.
Sign your name here and let me know you support my push to regulate these social media giants. Peter
