Friends,
During my time in public service, I have always followed a thoughtful and deliberative path. Whether it was around contentious issues such as reforming homeless services or building consensus for LGBT protections, I made better decisions after a careful review of facts. This is the approach I have taken with the impeachment inquiry we find ourselves in, and I hope you will take a moment to read my thoughts on this.
The president's televised call on China and Ukraine to investigate a political opponent, as well as allegations that he threatened our national security and abused his power for personal gain, are serious and demand the attention of Congress, where we have a Constitutional duty to conduct oversight. I take that duty seriously.
The President has made it clear he will do everything within his power to hide the facts unless pressed with the authority of an official impeachment inquiry. Throughout this fact-finding mission I have been and remain concerned that the words "impeachment inquiry" convey a perception that Congress has already come to a conclusion. However, at this point, an inquiry is clearly necessary.
For myself, I will continue to approach this inquiry with the same thoughtful and deliberative mindset as I have everything else during my time in public service. I hope my colleagues in Congress, from both parties, will join me in committing to addressing the facts, and reserving judgement throughout this process.
Voters want us to fulfill our Constitutional duty in service to our constituents and our country, while also continuing to pursue real solutions to the problems keeping them up at night. We still have other work to do. Washington is already low on results -- we cannot allow this inquiry to stop our progress altogether.
Thank you for taking a moment to read this.
Best,
-Ben
