Hi John,

As I write, members of our youth network - together with other grassroots groups from around the UK - are protesting outside AstraZeneca’s offices in Cambridge and Macclesfield, as well as at Oxford University, to call for a People’s Vaccine.

As AstraZeneca holds its annual shareholder meeting, we’re here to demand the company keeps its vaccine affordable and acts to make sure its vaccine technology and know-how are shared widely and fairly, so that everyone, everywhere can be safe.

The time for change is now

Momentum is growing internationally for scaling up the production of Covid-19 vaccines. Just last week, President Biden announced the US would support the proposal from the global south to suspend patents on Covid-19 vaccines. This proposal would allow vaccine manufacturers around the world to make Covid-19 vaccines without fear of being sued for infringing intellectual property rights.

Over the last few days, international figures - including the Pope, and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry - have joined the call for pharma giants to waive vaccine patents, and more countries have started considering waiving patents, including New Zealand, Canada and the EU.

Yet big pharma companies, including AstraZeneca, are still standing in the way. The problems with the big pharma model will not and cannot be solved by corporate goodwill. Big business simply shouldn’t be in charge of deciding who gets vaccinated and who doesn’t.

Help ensure Covid-19 vaccines are available to everyone, everywhere

It’s vitally important that Covid-19 vaccine patents are suspended during the pandemic, and for big pharma to share their know-how globally, as the best way of ensuring there are enough vaccines for everyone everywhere.

Regular gifts give us the long-term stability to plan effective campaigns and the flexibility to respond to crises like these.
