LCA is encouraging Texas supporters to email their elected officials opposing proposed ag-gag law HB1480 by May 11, 2021. HB1480 has been placed on the General State Calendar and is scheduled for its second hearing TOMORROW.
Introduced in January 2021 by Representative John Cyrier (R) and Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst (R), HB 1480 / SB 472 are amendments to the Agriculture Code that seeks to create an ag-gag law in Texas.

Texas' proposed ag-gag law is backed by industries that have financial stakes in the animal agricultural industry. The Texas Poultry Federation, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and Texas Association of Dairymen all testified in support of HB1480/SB472.
Ag-gag laws are a direct violation of the First Amendment right of Freedom of Speech and seek to hide what is happening to animals on factory farms, in transit, and in slaughterhouses by making it a crime to document the truth.Although targeted at animal rights activists, ag-gag also makes it illegal for whistleblowers to expose public health and safety concerns; workers' rights abuses; and environmental concerns.
Unfortunately, ag-gag laws have been sweeping North America. To date in the United States, six states have active ag-gag laws and in Canada, two provinces. LCA monitors ag-gag legislation and campaigns against it as it arises.
