A safe and healthy pregnancy is a fundamental human right, but far too many people in America — particularly Black women — lack the high-quality, comprehensive care they need for themselves and their babies.
That’s why I’m proud to reintroduce the MOMMIES Act in partnership with Senator Cory Booker. This transformative legislation expands Medicaid for all birthing people and promotes community-based, holistic approaches to maternity care.
The facts are clear: Our country is facing a maternal health crisis. The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world. And for Black women, the danger is even greater: Black women are 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications and twice as likely to lose their child to premature death.
Birthing while Black should not be a death sentence. It’s past time for bold action to address the disparate health outcomes for Black women and all birthing people of color, improve care, and save lives.
Thank you for being in this fight for health care justice with me.
In solidarity,
Ayanna Pressley
