PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

We've got great Support, Education, and Advocacy tools this week, including partnering on two great events to join! Check them out below.

Support

The Sound Mind Mental Health Music Festival

We are #PFLAGProud to announce we're partnering with Sound Mind and the Sound Mind Mental Health Music Festival on May 20th. This global livestream--which also has a live drive-in (COVID-safe) option--is bringing together artists, speakers, and a coalition of mental-health and allied organizations to build community and open dialogue around mental health through the power of music.

All Time Low, Fitz and The Tantrums, Charlotte Lawrence, Lovelytheband, and more will perform, with speakers from leading mental health organizations taking the stage.

Local to Ventura, CA? Tickets are on sale now for the COVID-safe in-person event! Or view the event online free of charge, May 20th at 9pm ET/6pm PT, on the Consequence of Sound's YouTube and Facebook channels.

Education

Three Steps to Being Kind on Social Media (While You’re Stuck at Home)

Just because you’re staying in, and times are tough, doesn’t mean your social media skills should regress! So, stay safe and take these steps to engage.

  1. Learn: Read this article about managing social media during an election year and this one about confirmation bias online to learn more how you can be a better person on social media and shut down fake news and trolls online.
  2. Watch: Check out Let's Get Social: Social Media the PFLAG Way and Moderate Moderating: Social Media Engagement the PFLAG Way, both presented with PFLAG Chapter leaders in mind –but useful for anyone who is trying to create conversation rather than flame wars and be kinder online.
  3. Share: Use social media to elevate what is important to you and demonstrate your allyship! Be brave, share posts about LGBTQ+ equality (and racial justice, voting rights, disability justice, environmental justice, whatever you are most passionate about) and make a commitment to engage with your friends and followers (but don’t feed the trolls!).

Advocacy

Be you! By us. For us. An Equality Act Event

Join us on Monday, May 17th from 6:30pm - 8:30pm ET for a night of fun, facts, and action to learn more about the Equality Act! The first hour of the event we will host a panel of leaders and advocates from our community to explore how updating federal nondiscrimination protections will impact and improve our lives and those in our communities. In the second hour, we will host an action event that will help you to advocate and support passing the Equality Act. We are #PFLAGProud to partner on this important event.

Register now for this event focused on transgender and gender non-conforming people and the Equality Act.
