Dear John,
Important news: today we settled a lawsuit over 13 disputed federal prospecting permits, covering 22 square miles, that were unlawfully extended for Twin Metals and could have allowed the foreign company to significantly expand its proposed sulfide-ore copper mine at the edge of the Boundary Waters.
With your support, we will keep up this fight until the Wilderness is permanently protected. There’s only one more day left in the 2021 Spring Forward MN campaign - act now to double your gift. Give today.
We sued in federal court after these prospecting permits were renewed in 2020 without consideration of environmental impacts, with no public input, and despite major risks to the environment. They would have allowed Twin Metals to drill holes, build roads and do other mining exploratory work along miles of Birch Lake shoreline, as well as along miles of the Boundary Waters Wilderness border. Now, the federal Bureau of Land Management will go back and conduct an environmental analysis, consult with biologists on the impact to endangered species, collect public comment, and issue a new decision. Make a gift today to help us continue this critical work to protect the Boundary Waters. “Today’s agreement is an important step in restoring proper, lawful process and informed decision-making concerning proposed copper mining on the doorstep of the Boundary Waters,” said Alison Flint, senior legal director at The Wilderness Society.
Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness, founder and lead organization of the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters and The Wilderness Society were represented by Center for Biological Diversity in this lawsuit. The Biden Administration has lots of work ahead to repair the damage of the last 4 years. We will keep doing this important work and insisting upon rational, science-based decision making, and are confident it will lead to the permanent protection of this wild and irreplaceable Wilderness. Give today.
For the Wilderness, Becky Rom
