Dear Friends,

When Kat, Jennifer, and I co-founded the Project ID Action Fund, our goal was to make it easier and less costly for people to obtain government-issued photo ID. That’s why we’ve been endorsing pro-ID candidates in elections across the country, in addition to drafting model legislation that reflects best practices in this field.

One step towards achieving our goal is ending debt-based license suspensions. Per the Fines and Fees Justice Center ([link removed]) , it has been estimated that at least 11 million people nationwide have their driver’s licenses suspended because they cannot pay fines or fees. For the 86% of Americans who drive to work, a suspended license means a loss of income, trapping millions of people in a cycle of debt. Our affiliated 501(c)(3), Spread The Vote, has a dedicated fund ([link removed]) to help clients in this position break free from the cycle. Donate today » ([link removed]) While most ID-related policy is set at the state level—16 states and Washington, D.C. have already enacted reforms around this issue—I’m writing because there’s something else we can all do to keep the momentum
going. The Driving for Opportunity Act is a bipartisan bill that will “provide grants to States that do not suspend, revoke, or refuse to renew a driver’s license of a person or refuse to renew a registration of a motor vehicle for failure to pay a civil or criminal fine or fee.” The bill is currently moving through committees in the House of Representatives and we’d love for you to show your support by signing the Free to Drive campaign’s petition ([link removed]) . With appreciation,

Marissa
