Smiles
How does Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann celebrate his 75th birthday? In major Hawaiian style, that’s how. For the past several decades, Kreutzmann has made his home on the island of Kaua'i. For his 75th, Kreutzmann reunited his post-Grateful Dead band Billy and the Kids for a weekend of music on the island and the results were a whole bunch of smiles.
In this clip (scroll your curser to 1:15 in where the music begins) you’ll see Carlos Santana, guitarist/singer Billy Strings, saxophonist James Casey and Billy & The Kids—Kreutzmann, guitarist Tom Hamilton (JRAD/Ghost Light), keyboardist Aaron Magner (the Disco Biscuits) and bassist Reed Mathis (Electric Beethoven)—perform an extended “Scarlet Begonias.” The ensemble deviated from the usual move into “Fire On The Mountain” and instead worked “Scarlet” into an “Iko Iko” sung by Strings. What a gift! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ3Mc-UZvGE
