Indivisibles,

Tomorrow’s a big deal: the For the People Act will be marked up in the
Senate!

This is an important step on the path to passing the For the People Act
and its essential provisions into law, and it’s symbolically important
because in the past, Mitch McConnell never let the bill reach this stage.
But with Democrats in charge, we’re moving this bill forward day by day!

A couple key things to know:

 1. The Rules Committee is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans.
That means that we’re likely to see a lot of stalling tactics from the
Republicans, but they won’t be able to pass any major amendments.
 2. We expect tomorrow’s markup will be full of a lot of showboating --
much like the D.C. statehood hearings, the Republicans are going to
come out with lots of bad-faith arguments, while Democrats will remain
focused on the crucial issues: expanding and strengthening our
democracy. We should not let ourselves get distracted by the
Republicans’ drama.
 3. Our key ask has not changed: we need you to [ [link removed] ]call your senators and
insist they pass this bill. That’s all senators -- the Republicans
(and a few moderate Dems) need to understand how popular the bill it
is in their home states, and the Democrats can use lines like “I got
400 calls supporting For the People this week!” to persuade reluctant
colleagues.
 4. Don’t worry about the 50-50 split: the power sharing agreement has a
provision to move the bill forward even in a deadlocked committee, so
this will move forward after tomorrow, no matter what antics the GOP
tries.

With that, here are your weekly to-dos:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Your 3 weekly to-dos

 1. [ [link removed] ]Make calls to your senators about S. 1, the For the People Act.
It’s urgent that your senators hear from you: if they’ve already
co-sponsored, tell them thank you and urge them to speak out publicly
about moving the bill urgently without letting the filibuster get in
the way. If you live in West Virginia, tell Senator Manchin our
democracy is at stake, and you urge him to support the bill ([ [link removed] ]we've
got a special script just for you here!). And if you have Republican
senators, tell them you’re paying attention and you won’t forget their
vote.
 2. [ [link removed] ]Tell your senators to make D.C. the 51st state. The good news is
that all Democratic senators except five have co-sponsored S. 51 to
make the District the next state (looking at you, Senators Sinema,
Kelly, Manchin, King, and Shaheen). But, co-sponsorship is not enough.
This week, make a call to both of your senators and demand they
support a committee hearing on D.C. statehood as soon as possible, a
committee markup on the bill, and eliminating the filibuster so that
we can pass the bill on the floor. And tell them to speak out publicly
about the urgent need for statehood for the District.
 3. Make calls to your [ [link removed] ]senators and [ [link removed] ]representative to ensure that we
win a robust recovery. This means everything in the American Jobs and
Families Plans, as well as key priorities that are currently left out,
like citizenship for undocumented immigrants, lowering prescription
drug prices, and expanding Medicare. [ [link removed] ]You can read more about our
priorities in our explainer here.

[ [link removed] ]P.S. We rely on your support to keep call pages up and running, fund
ads to get the word out, and continue all the work we’re doing this year.
