I am committed to holding corporations accountable when they discriminate against Washingtonians with disabilities, including mental illness.

Allianz Insurance, one of the largest travel insurance providers, denied hundreds of claims from Washingtonians who purchased travel insurance but were forced to cancel their flights due to mental health events. Allianz denied their claims even after Washingtonians provided documentation from mental health professionals.

Do you agree that companies like Allianz should be held accountable for their discriminatory and callous conduct?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As we bring awareness to the struggles people face every day and work to fight the stigma, it’s important to make it clear — illegal discrimination against Washingtonians with disabilities, including mental health challenges, is wrong.

One couple had to cancel a trip because of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, and Allianz denied their claim anyway. A Vancouver resident used his tax refund to pay for a ticket for his 9 year-old son to fly to see him. The son was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and the doctor recommended he not travel to acclimate to his medication, but Allianz refused to honor the father’s insurance claim.

As the People’s Attorney, I will stand up to corporate special interests when they discriminate against Washingtonians to pad their profits. I will always fight for the civil rights of Washingtonians.
