John — We’ve been keeping you posted on the dire consequences of Donald Trump’s decision in the final hours of his Presidency to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list.

This confounding decision was made even though gray wolves only occupy 20% of their historic range — far too soon to remove them from federal protection.

In March, we shared that the state of Wisconsin allowed for a hunt of 200 wolves during its hunting season but ended up over hunting that threshold by 86% within 60 hours . Moreover, this hunt occurred during the wolves’ breeding season — raising concerns that the killing of pregnant wolves could have an exponential impact on their population.

And now, the Idaho legislature has passed a bill that would aim to reduce the gray wolf population in the state by 90%. And not just through longer hunting seasons managed by the state’s wildlife agency, but by hiring out private contractors to essentially serve as "hitmen" for wolves.

Gray wolves are a vital part of the ecosystem. They keep grazing animals in check, which helps protect naturally growing trees and plants. But without protection, they could go the way of the Red Wolves in the eastern United States, where only an estimated 20 wolves still roam.

Andrea Zaccardi, senior attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, warns that this new Idaho legislation is “unprecedented” and is going to “essentially, remove [gray wolves] from the landscape.”

We’ve had enough of short-sighted decisions when it comes to the conservation and protection of endangered wildlife.
