More steps in the right direction
**A message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:**
Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council
With the national infection rate currently at the lowest level since September, and hospital admissions now similar to last July, the Government announced today that the next phase of England?s lockdown roadmap will proceed as planned.
From next Monday, people will be allowed to meet friends and family indoors, stay away overnight and visit entertainment venues indoors. As the restrictions ease we will of course come into contact with more and more people through activities such as work, study and family life. Around one-in-three people with Covid-19 don?t have any symptoms, but can still pass it on, which is why it?s so important that people regularly test. We will continue to offer a range of ways for people to access regular asymptomatic testing [ [link removed] ]. The process is free, quick and easy and will help keep us all safe.

*Developers of student accommodation set to contribute towards affordable housing in Nottingham*
Nottingham skyline
The City Council continues to receive lots of applications from developers for student accommodation ? and we are due to consider a proposal next week which would require them to make a contribution towards affordable housing in the city.
This is similar to arrangements where developers contribute towards transport infrastructure, educational services and open spaces. The new arrangement would support our Local Plan requirements for a proportion of all new developments to include affordable housing and help to improve the balance of housing types across the city.
While there may be a perception there?s already more new student accommodation than is needed, in fact there is still not enough to meet the demand and we can certainly expect to see more proposals come forward. Purpose-built accommodation for students helps to meet that demand, free up traditional family housing for its original purpose and, with the proposed contribution, can help to meet the demand among local people for affordable housing. *Police and Crime Commissioner *
Nottinghamshire Police
This weekend the result of the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Election was announced and Caroline Henry was elected to the position.
I would like to thank the outgoing Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping, for everything he has done over the years to make Nottingham safer. He has made lots of progress on important issues and I have already written to the new Police and Crime Commissioner asking for a meeting to discuss how we can build on that to make the city safer.
I believe partnership working is essential to reducing crime and anti-social behaviour and in my letter to the new PCC I outline the resources I believe the city needs to achieve that. Six things I would like to discuss specifically are:
* Continuing to reduce knife crime in the city
* Recruiting sufficient numbers of police officers and deploying them where they are needed
* Funding essential services for survivors of domestic violence
* Maintaining proactive policing with Operation Reacher
* Developing a Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy
* The new custody suite on Radford Road
I hope Caroline Henry will work constructively with Nottingham City Council to make sure the priorities and needs of the city when it comes to crime and anti-social behaviour are met.

*Join us for a ?virtual cuppa? and find out about fostering*
Love hearts
Today marks the start of Foster Care Fortnight, which is a national campaign to highlight the vital work carried out by foster carers and seek to boost recruitment.
Here in Nottingham, we currently have more than 650 children in care and all are looking for a secure and loving home to help them achieve their full potential. Being a foster carer is an incredibly rewarding ? and sometimes challenging ? role but one with the power to have a lifelong impact on the future prospects of a child.
Something as simple as showing a young person the love and respect that might sadly have been lacking up to that point, as well as providing a secure home environment with rules and boundaries, can have the most incredible impact.
As part of Foster Care Fortnight, we?re hosting a number of ?virtual? sessions where people who are interested in discovering more about fostering can drop in and ask questions. It?s very informal and a way we can chat while our regular information evenings are still not possible because of the pandemic.

Mental Health Awareness Week
Every mind matters logo
Today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week which presents an opportunity for people to think about their wellbeing and that of their loved ones.
The past year has been very difficult for everyone, and many people are struggling right now. The focus of this year?s Mental Health Awareness Week is about how spending time in nature can support mental health and put us in a better mood.
We?re incredibly lucky in Nottingham to have so many Green Flag award-winning parks and an amazing 20 per cent of our city is given over to green spaces ? making us one of the greenest cities in the UK.
