There are thousands of refugee-hopefuls worldwide waiting anxiously for approval to immigrate to the United States. President Biden just made this dream a reality for 62,500 people, and we have progressive Democrats to thank.
Donald Trump enforced an inhumane refugee cap of 15,000 people per year, ignoring numerous climate, health, and political crises across the globe. This unacceptable cap was fueled by white supremacy and nativist pressure, and its effects impacted hundreds of thousands of people fleeing instability and violence.
Pressure from progressives reversed President Biden's initial hesitation to raise the cap this year. Because of ASPIRE's work electing AAPI Democrats, the cap has moved up to 62,500 refugees this year -- more than quadruple Trump's cap.
But, this fight is far from over. 62,500 refugees per year is a great starting point, but for Biden to scale up his refugee resettlement program as promised, we need to elect as many diverse Democrats as possible to keep up the pressure.
