Last week, the first family reunifications under the Biden administration began – with four families reuniting after being torn apart by Trump's cruel separation practice. We're thrilled for these families, but it's crucial to remember that likely more than a thousand still remain apart.

In a second, I'm going to lay out the most urgent updates for you around this issue. But before we get into it, I want you to know there's action you can take right now to help: Sign our petition urging President Biden to reunite and provide relief for the families torn apart.

Now, here's what's going on in the fight:

• As a reminder, over 5,500 migrant children were systematically separated by the Trump administration. Thousands have been reunited as a result of ACLU litigation and grassroots help – but the parents of 445 separated children are not yet located.
• Many mistakenly assume that only this missing 400-plus remain separated – but we have found hundreds of other deported parents, and they remain separated because of the Trump administration's refusal to allow them to reunite in the United States.
• Three months ago, Biden established the Family Reunification Task Force, and the ACLU is now in settlement talks with the task force to ensure that the families aren't just reunited, but that they receive care, restitution, and permanent legal status.

A task force is only a start toward doing the right thing, ACLU Supporter. Families remain separated – and the irreparable trauma inflicted upon all the families is everlasting. The ACLU, our coalition partners, and activists like you are working to ensure this remains an urgent priority for Biden.

And that means pushing the administration to make sure every family torn apart is located and allowed to reunite in the U.S. if they choose, offered permanent legal status and resources for care – and finally, we need a commitment that family separation will never happen again.
